From Campus to Community: My Journey for Workers Justice with the Sudbury Workers Centre

My Experience with the Sudbury Workers Education and Advocacy Centre

Hi there… I am Yahya Janish, an international student from India currently studying in Canada. I am really excited to share my journey as I begin my internship with the Sudbury Workers Centre. This non-profit organization is dedicated to helping workers who face unfair treatment, exploitation, and unsafe working conditions.

I decided to work with the Workers Centre because I want to learn more about the challenges workers face in Canada, especially those in immigrant and marginalized communities. Being an international student myself, I know what it’s like to have restrictions on work hours, and I realize that others, like asylum seekers and temporary workers, face even tougher situations. During this internship, I want to better understand how labour laws in Canada are made and how they impact people’s daily lives. Above all, I am passionate about raising awareness about these issues and making sure workers know their rights and how to protect themselves.

Why the Sudbury Workers Centre is the Right Place for Me

When I first heard about the Sudbury Workers Centre, I felt it was the perfect place for me. the Workers Centre focuses on helping people who are treated unfairly or exploited at work, which matches my personal values. As a non-profit organization, they offer help and guidance to people who may not have the knowledge or resources to understand Canada’s complex labour laws.

One of the things I am really looking forward to is helping raise awareness about the work the Workers Centre does. Many workers, especially immigrants and students, might not fully understand their rights in Canada, and I want to help change that. I plan to use social media and in-person presentations at schools, colleges, and workplaces to educate others about their rights and how the Workers Centre can support them.

Learning About Workers’ Rights in Canada

A big part of my internship will involve learning about workers’ rights and how Canadian labour laws work. As an international student, I’ve experienced how tricky it can be to navigate the rules around working, and this often leads to stress or unfair treatment. For example, international students can only work a limited number of hours per week, which can sometimes put us in difficult situations with our employers.

Through my time at the Workers Centre, I hope to gain a deeper understanding of these laws and share that knowledge with others in similar situations. It’s important for everyone regardless of their immigration status to know that they have rights in the workplace and that they shouldn’t be afraid to stand up for themselves if they’re being treated unfairly.

Giving Back and Creating Change

In addition to spreading awareness, I also want to support the Workers Centre´s other important efforts, such as organizing events and raising funds. Non-profits like the Workers Centre depend on support from the community, and I want to do my part to help them grow. Whether through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading the word, I want to encourage more people to get involved and help create a fairer, more just world for all workers.

I am also really motivated to inspire others to support non-profits like the Workers Centre because the work they do is so important. By promoting these organizations and their goals, I truly believe we can make a meaningful difference for workers who are struggling.

Looking to the Future

Looking ahead, I am confident that this internship will help me grow, both personally and professionally. I am determined to become a strong advocate for workers’ rights, and I’m excited about the opportunity to make a positive impact by helping raise awareness and support for those in need.

Working with the Sudbury Workers Centre will give me the chance to use my skills to promote fairness and justice for all workers, no matter their background or status. I am really looking forward to everything that lies ahead and to being part of the important work the Workers Centre is doing. Together, I believe we can build a future where every worker is treated with respect and dignity.
