Permanent Resident Status

Permanent Resident Status

Dear Minister Mendicino and Mr. Levebvre,

We are pleased and heartened to learn of the initiative to provide asylum seekers who work in health care during the pandemic a pathway to permanent resident status. This is such an important step for redressing systemic wrongs, especially during this pandemic. Because of the two-tiered immigration system that Canada has adopted, newcomers to Canada who do not have permanent resident status are denied part or full access to healthcare and social supports and programs. Non- permanent residents, largely racialized, have few choices but to take low-waged, precarious work, where because of their status (or lack thereof) they often are denied access to justice. These human rights injustices can only be addressed by providing status for all.

So while we applaud your initiative to provide asylum seekers who work in health care with a path for permanent residency, it does not go far enough. This program must be extended to all asylum seekers. We have built an economic system that exploits newcomers by asking them to work at low wages and without the basic protections that permanent residents and citizens have. It is an egregious violation of human rights.

We respectfully request that the initiative to provide asylum seekers who work in health care during the pandemic be put in place as quickly as possible. We respectfully request that it be expanded to include all asylum seekers, and to all migrant workers who are here without full status. Let Canada be a leader in the upholding of human rights by eliminating the system that denies asylum seekers their rights.

Sincerly,
Your Constituents.
