Job Title: Indigenous Outreach and Education officer 

Reports to: Executive Director

Hours of Work:  Full time 37.5 hours/week)   (Flexible – Some Evening and Weekend Work Required)

Rate of Pay: $21.00/hour

Summary of work areas: 

The Indigenous Outreach and Education Officer is responsible for creating community connections and creating educational opportunities within the Indigenous communities of Northeastern Ontario. The Indigenous Outreach and Education Officer will also assist in the creation and delivery  of presentations providing legal education about Indigenous Rights in the Workplace both on and off reserve. They provide information regarding the services of the Sudbury Workers Education and Advocacy Centre, provide educational workshops and facilitate discussions on worker rights such as employment standards, health and safety and human rights. They work one on one with workers who have questions around their rights at work, and provide assistance to workers in addressing workplace grievances. The Outreach and Education officer also seeks out allies and community partners to create new opportunities for educational presentations and outreach. 

Duties Include:

  • Build community connections and capacity within the District of Sudbury, Manitoulin Island, and throughout Northeastern Ontario and the Huron Robinson Treaty are with indigenous communities and organizations;
  • Implement outreach strategies, track and evaluate outreach results;  
  • Provide on-going, one-on-one education and support to participant’s / case work and advocacy with clients
  • Make appropriate referrals to other agencies or interventions as required 
  • Attending meetings as required
  • Deliver presentations and workshops to various groups in Northeastern Ontario; 
  • Attend appropriate events and promote SWEAC and Decent Work Campaigns; 
  • Identify and assist with training volunteers to provide peer support and leadership for workers in the outlying communities; 
  • Keep up to date and informed on all Labour Law changes and regulations, and keep up to date and informed on all labour trends
  • Provide progress reports

Requirements: 

  • Multilingualism (English, French, Anishinàbemiwin) considered an asset; 
  • Valid driver’s license considered an asset, and access to a vehicle a bonus; 
  • Ability to work flexible hours;
  • Ability to travel long distances (North Bay, Espanlo, Manitoulin, and other locations in Northeastern Ontario.) 
  • Working knowledge of labour standards considered an asset; but we are interested in candidates who are passionate, with lived experience, who are willing to share and engage
